It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

埃德加·爱伦·坡（Edgar Allan Poe,1809-1849）是美国十九世纪著名诗人、短篇小说家、文学评论家。他生于波士顿，曾在弗吉尼亚大学和西点军校学习，但时间都不长。他一生坎坷，常有怀才不遇的苦闷，心情忧郁，常常借酒消愁，以至嗜酒成性。他自1827年自费出版第一部诗集，走上文学创作的道路。为了谋生，他先后担任一些报刊杂志的编辑，主要撰写文艺评论文章。由于他心直口快，笔锋犀利，在美国文坛树敌不少，人缘极差。但是他在欧洲享有盛誉。进入20世纪，他在世界文坛享有不朽地位，被誉为”永为世人共赏的伟大抒情诗人。”他的诗歌代表作是《乌鸦》，短篇小说代表作是《厄舍古屋的倒塌》。
